Renting a storage unit is a great way to hold on to all of those items that you only use occasionally without allowing them to clutter your home. Unfortunately, retrieving your items from a storage unit can be time consuming and labor intensive if you do not take the time to organize your unit from the start. Thankfully, the tips below can help you to effectively organize your unit so that finding the items you need becomes a piece of cake.

Color Code Your Box Labels

Stopping to read each and every label on each and every box can easily take hours when your storage unit is filled to the brim. Unfortunately, for many people, this is the only way for them to determine exactly what is in each box and find the items that they need. Thankfully, simply choosing a few different colored labels for your boxes can help you to avoid this confusion all together.

By assigning a specific color label to each area of your home, you will be able to quickly identify which boxes may contain the items you are looking for. For instance, if you choose blue labels for all of your boxes containing kitchen items, you can quickly narrow down your search to only boxes with blue labels when searching for your spare coffee pot.

Always Create An Aisle

The most time consuming part of retrieving items from storage is often bypassing all of the items that are located in front of the item you need. This is because many people pack their storage unit so tightly that the only way to get past these items is to remove them from the storage unit. Ensuring that you have left an aisle between each row of stored items will allow you to avoid this physically strenuous task.

Create A Map

So right now, you probably know that you placed all of your kitchen items in the back left corner. However, your recollection of this fact a month, two months, or even six months from now may not be so crystal clear. This is why creating a map of your storage unit can be such an effective way of keeping things organized so that you can quickly find the items you need when accessing your unit in the future.

When creating your storage map, be sure to indicate the location of any large items first. This will allow you to easily orient yourself once inside your storage unit. Next, mark the location of different groups of boxes, such as those containing seasonal items or items for specific areas of your home.

Once your map is complete, be sure to update this map each time you add a new item to your storage unit, as well as each time items are removed.
