You don't need to be born with green thumb in order to have a beautiful, green lawn. What you do need are the right tools and supplies. This guide is designed for homeowners who want to take care of their lawn themselves and don't want to rely on hiring gardeners to show up every week and do all of the work for them.

The Right Grass Seed

First up is the grass seed. If you get the wrong seed, then you are going to be headed for disaster. The main issue to consider is your location. Generally speaking, grass seed can be broken down into two main types: cold weather and warm weather. The location of your home will determine what type of seed you get. Cool season grass seed is better for shade, and it's also better in climates such as the Midwest and Northeast where spring and fall temperatures get cool. A popular cool weather seed is Kentucky bluegrass. If you live down south, or somewhere out west, then you should look for a seed such as St. Augustine.

A Lawnmower and Edging Tools

You will need to take care of the grass once it has filled in. Besides making sure the lawn looks good, it will help keep it healthy. If you don't mow the lawn, then it can grow wildly, and that can lead to certain areas getting little sun and eventually going bare. Get a good mower and an edger to handle areas near your walkways. There are lots of different types of mowers (self-propelled, bagless, etc.) but the main feature you should look into is that is has an adjustable blade height. This will enable you to cut the grass to the exact height you want.

A Sprinkler System

If you are serious about getting a good looking lawn, then you will want to invest in a good sprinkler system. You might envision yourself outside with a hose, but that really is not the best way to water your lawn. The hose won't be as evenhanded as a sprinkler. You risk over-watering some areas and under-watering others. The advantage to a sprinkler system is that the sprinkler heads can be installed at specific locations to ensure a perfect watering. Plus, they can be set on a timer so that they water the lawn automatically. This way you never "forget" to water the law, and you don't have to worry about going on vacation and leaving the lawn untended to. Click here for info about sprinkler options.
